The day after the wedding, we decided to sleep in and be lazy for most of the day. Then Philip texted that he and Lui were going to fire up the grill for dinner at the shop. So - after a quick trip to the salon for a haircut (Moro) and a foot massage (me) - we headed off to Katipunan for some grillin' and chillin'
Every surfer's favorite tambayan is now open for full on business. :)
The shop is officially re-opened for full surf retailing. Come by to check out a full range of surf/skate boards and surf accessories. Get your leashes, wax, traction pads, board socks, soft racks... basically everything you need. Have a board custom made by Lui and Jong or pick one out from the quiver on the wall.
Come by the Fiveforty Surf Co shop today! Now. No, now.
Fiveforty Surf Co is located along Katipunan Avenue Extension, right across Countryside Restaurant and beside the Quirino Memorial Hospital

Big ups to everyone who showed up to the party last night. Unfortunately, I wasnt on camera detail and there arent a lot of snaps from the raging evening. Thanks too to the local surfers of Zambales, Baler, La Union and Siargao who came down to Manila to join us. We appreciated your presence there.
Thanks to PSF and Aloha Boardsports for the support. :)
Congrats to ToJim. May bagong Sector9 bigla! Thundercats Power.
Video edited by Lui Tortuya Shot on location in Siargao, Zambales and the Fivefortysurf Co Shop Big ups to the Dance Off competitors... your shadows barely conceal who you are. ;)
Pandora, who is 7'6, travels in a 540 boardbag that I've owned for almost as long as 540 has been around. It has weathered all forms of road and boat trips and has made it as far as Batanes and as close as, well, the shop. But my Alex stands at 6'6 and cant be made to share Ate Pandora's bag all the time. Time to buy another boardbag.
The thing is, I like to support the local industries so this time, to spread the support, I looked to Fluid Surf. Papa Bjorn and Edsel Pabon have come up with a new line of Pinoy-oriented boardbags. Tonight, I became the proud owner of one of these spruikingly cool bags. :)
If you want one of your own (and after you see it I'm sure you will), get in touch with Fluid Surf through: 02-439-6186 (landline), 0918-925-8607 (Bjorn) and at contact@fluidsurf.com.ph
Mid-week swell led to baby waves followed by the fear of a total flat spell for the weekend. But no! Easter Sunday we were blessed with 2-3 foot solid waves at The Point! So... 1. nagka-alon and 2. a lot of us had gone home na the night before so 3. I actually surfed The Point 4. with maybe 10-12 other people lang!
First I was using Doc's magic longboard and then after a few rides, I swapped with Joncy and he let me borrow his wonderful fish. (Thankies muchly to Doc and Joncy for the use of the boards). My boards (Pandora, Alex and even the newly named S9 Sage had gone home na ahead of me. Hehe)
In between the surfing: naps in the kubo, episodes of Heroes and Prison Break, nasty jellyfish stings, watching 300 again, cooking at the ancestral apartment, adopting Jam in the Yeah, Yeah house, having Mama spend the weekend in LU, the difference between sunblock and suntan, karaoke and jamming with Atty Ely, sushi ala Takahashi and a very steady ride home with Moro, Beej and Perez.
The second week of our crazy Siargao adventure saw our numbers greatly reduced as nearly everyone headed back to Manila (booo!!!). Of the original cast there were only five of us left: me, Moro, Lui, Aya and Carlo Perez... but we were joined very soon by Miko and JP Sarmiento (woot, woot)... and then by the Gamboas.
There was a competition in Northern Siargao and we thought that if we stayed behind, we would have all the waves to ourselves. Which might have been the case had a FLAT SPELL not visited us during those five days. So instead of surfing we ate. A lot. But hey, it was fiesta!!!
The Internationals were sick! Photos of that I swear I will edit and upload. And MSA was able to pull off a renegade web streaming live from the tower at Cloud 9. Yeah, yeah!
I know I havent posted the action shots yet. Bite me. Hehe. But here are the snapshots (at least) of our wild two week Siargao trip. This first half is from the Nationals when we were all still on the island.
The complete cast: me, Moro, Chris, Paolo, Carlo, Corey, Rey, Aya, Lui, Carla, Philip, Django, Jeff, Smith, Bad Boy, Kaw Kaw, Poks, Kali, Tim, Zeny and Olin. (Whew, ang dami!)
Highlights: Lui's budget accomodations, the Ocean 101 birthday party, the Pao vs Lui dance off at the bikini open, shiny silver banana hammocks, and watching the boys at the monster secret spot.
I took a staggering total of NINE usable photos that night. So I asked Sid if I could nick a few off of his gallery. For more of Sid's fabulous photos take the leap.
Itching to surf as I'd been stuck shooting from the Tower for days, I gamely joined the boys for a boat trip. The first spot turned out to be a dud (especially for me, surfing low tide on the wrong board is not recommended when you're a scaredy cat) and so we moved to another break... and damn was it ever breaking that morning!
Corey, Paolo, Carlo Perez, Moro, Rey and Lui got some sick waves. Aya and I thought we could take the shoulder on the Southpoint 6'6 fishes we had. Hahahaha!. What the hell were we thinking?! All in all, an adventurous boat trip filled with many stories to tell.
*No sharks were spotted during this particular trip*
I will keep adding to this album as I wade through more of the photos from the last national competition held at Cloud 9.
Freesurfing, lazy afternoons, pressed coffee, buffet dinners at Cabuntog, hangin' with the LU and Baler boys, reconnecting with the Siargao crew, habal-habal rides and quenching the desire for a mango shake.
I continue to wade through over 2,000 images. So this is going to have to do for now. Snapshots from our first day on Rooster Island.
It started at 5am when I picked Lui up at the shop. We had just hit the Valle area of C5 when he suddenly remembered that he left his ticket at his place. Great. So we pull a U, go back to his apartment and get the ticket.
We finally get to the airport, check in and immediately see this random guy sporting a "good boy mullet." I look over at Lui to tell him about it and at that exact same time, he was turning around to look at me. Instant mind synchronization. Laughter ensues. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the trip.
The mood just kept getting better and better as more and more of the crew rolled into the waiting lounge. All in all there were 18 of us traveling together -- me, Lui, Paolo, Corey, Carlo Perez, Olin, Zeny, Django, Bad Boy, Jeff, Smith, Okoy, Chris, Jona, and the Game Plan crew.
Enjoy clips from our 12-hour air-sea-land journey to Siargao!
