Blog EntryHappy Birthday PapaJul 4, '08 4:28 AM
for everyone

Let's begin with a chat I was just having this afternoon with Millie. Only hours after I spent some quiet time at the Church of the Gesu. :)

Kagey: well... its my dad's bday today and so i went by the chapel at my old uni to say a small prayer and right after singing happy bday to him, i found myself totally losing it. just crying and crying. so i feel a bit weird today as well.
Millie: aww. sorry kage
Kagey: its okay. its like i just never really got used to the idea that he's really dead. and i wish sometimes that i could know for sure that he's watching us.  not in a creepy restless ghost way...
Millie: yeah, sometimes that reassurance would be good.
Kagey: just cos like so many awesome things have happened for me since he passed... and i kind of wish i knew for sure that he knows about those things. like getting on wetsand's homepage. and my promotion at work. or even that i got my cordao in capoeira.
Millie: i think maybe if you believe he's there, then he'll be there.

And that leads us to this... my 2008 sort of birthday gift for Papa. I'd like to think this is what he was telling me today.

I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun,
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags.
I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.
You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.
Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

~ Walt Whitman
Song of Myself (Leaves of Grass)

For those nights at the ULTRA sitting right behind the Purefoods bench, screaming ourselves hoarse (even on school nights). For picnics at midnight in your room with Mama and Ton. For coming to all my figure skating practices and driving me home afterwards. For teaching me "it's not what you know, it's what grade you get." Hahaha. For letting me stay home to watch the Chicago Bulls' Threepeat finals. For giving me my first camera (Mama too). For yelling when you should have (I could be a snot sometimes, I know) and for hugging when I needed it. For impersonating Goofy's voice. For playing practical jokes on my friends. For correcting my grammar and editing all my papers, even my book reports. For introducing me to the wonderful world of the Food Network (yay  Ming Tsai, boo Bobby Flay). For 27 years of being the best dad ever, there will never be enough space for all the things I want to thank you for.

Blog EntryShow and Tell: Made it to the Main Page!Jul 2, '08 1:00 AM
for everyone
There is a photo I took of Osot Alcala at Cloud 9 that has been living in the Philippine swellwatch portion of Wetsand. It is one of my favorite photos primarily because Osot looks absolutely relaxed in it. There he is in a perfect standing barrel at one of the most famous right-handers in the country... with zero tension or stress in his body language. For all we know, he could thinking about what to eat at the Boulevard after his session. I love it... one of my favorite chargers completely at ease at his home  break.

Anyway, get this. Today I got an email from one of the peeps at Wetsand. He told me they moved my photo to the main page for the month of July!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH! How stoked am I?!!! Lemme tell you, I'm pretty f*cking stoked. :) I am as stoked as Osot is relaxed in that shot. I could do cartwheels right now if my body would only let me. Heehee.

That is all for this session of show and tell. Thank you to Chuck and Paolo!!! And of course to Osot. If he hadn't been out that day, there would be no photo.

Blog EntryYeah Yeah: soundtrack for the Baler long weekendJun 11, '08 2:44 AM
for everyone
This is my official song for the last long weekend's trip to Baler. Sunshine, fun waves, great company and of course, the magic that can only be Baler's innate vibe. Whether it was just being happy to surf with friends (instead of bitching that the waves weren't as big as expected) or paddling back out along the shoulder of a wave that a friend is just about to drop on... or finally surfing a spot after seven years of watching it... the mood of this song encapsulated it all. It wasn't an epic trip but it was really steady and filled with good vibes.

Love, love, love...

he businessman behind Boracay’s largest hotel-condominium project is defying orders from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to halt construction of his project, which environment officials said will destroy a wetland in the country’s top beach destination.

The P1.2 billion Boracay Crown Regency Hotel and Convention Center will be the “biggest hotel in Boracay” and will “put Boracay on the world map,” said Richard King, chair of J. King and Sons Co. Inc., the firm behind the project.

The project will add 457 hotel rooms in Boracay, and its convention center will accommodate 1,800 people. The whole hotel complex, which includes a water park, is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

“I won’t stop the project. I have all the necessary permits,” King told reporters Wednesday.

Blog EntryYou Can Read Naman Di Ba?!May 23, '08 12:22 AM
for everyone
This is a public service announcement. And the public that you would be serving? Me and maybe half of the people I know who also have issues with what I'm about to blog about.

A cut and paste taken from a previous entry that obviously did not take. So I'm going to have to do this all over again. Ready? Let's go.

Having half your contact list on a single private message invalidates the concept of a private message. Also, half the time these are invitations to gigs, shows, and parties. That's why there is an EVENTS option.

Plus whenever someone on this incredibly not private flight path hits reply, the rest of us receive it as well. Really, I don't need to know that taborkek247 said "kewl pare, see you there!" to your invitation to watch some garage band play in a high school gymnasium. Or that you lost your phone -- and I will now be receiving the numbers of random people who might be your friends but are perfect strangers to me. Also, this clogs up my inbox -- one that I maintain for both personal and business purposes. So please, a little respect.

Why not just write a blog and limit its recipient list? Wouldn't that make more sense? So everyone can reply to their hearts' content.. .and I dont need to know about it.

Let's keep those private messages... private. Kaya ba? Let's keep Spam where it belongs... in a frying pan with a light coating of brown sugar.

Thank you.

Blog EntryYes We Can: will.i.am/obamaMay 9, '08 6:16 AM
for everyone
One of the most moving speeches in recent times.
One of the most substantial music videos to be released virally over the internet.
Even if you aren't an American, the words - their true selves - apply. To all of us.
Yes we can.

For the full transcript::
It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation. Yes we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom. Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness. Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountain-top and pointed the way to the Promised Land. Yes we can to justice and equality.

Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world. Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change. We want change!

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant. We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check. We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. We want change!

The hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in America’s story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea - Yes. We. Can.

Blog EntryRandom 10Apr 15, '08 5:59 AM
for everyone
Tagged by Dicey! (Thank you for giving me yet another distraction from work)

  • Each blogger starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves.
  • Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their own blog about their ten things and post these rules.
  • At the end of your blog, you need to choose ten people to get tagged and list their names.
  • Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.
Here goes:

1. I get spooked if the shower curtains on any bathroom are closed. Even if I'm only in there to brush my teeth, I have to open closed shower curtains otherwise I feel like some psycho is going to jump out from behind and mutilate me with a kitchen knife.

2.  Like Dicey, Book Sale is my haven. I read too fast and love too many genres to afford buying at a normal bookshop. My favorite haunts are Greenhills and the highly overlooked Blue Wave, Marikina. Books for P70? Woot, woot!

3. When you need a lechon carved, you come to me. No joke.

4.  I  love stale french fries. Okay, this is what  I do -- I buy french fries from a fast food chain (a rare occurence but gotta admit, it happens). Then I close the bag and make sure no air gets out. I leave the bag like that overnight and then in the morning, I eat my stale french fries. No one else I know does this and I am still waiting to meet a kindred stale fries spirit.

5.
This I got from my lola cos she's kind of a girl scout din. You know how on airlines and some diners they give you packets or salt/pepper/chili flakes/soy/brown sugar/etc and sometimes you dont naman use them? Well, I save those packets in a small re-sealable plastic instead of tossing the packets out. Sayang e. And, whenever I'm somewhere and the food needs a little punch -- I just reach into my bad and ta-dah... instant seasonings!

6.
I talk to myself. Like out loud. Especially when I am trying to calm down or psyche myself up for something. Or if I have to remind myself to do something and I think I am likely to forget it... I'll say it out loud... as though talking to another person. Sometimes I also argue with myself. Also out loud. No, I am not crazy.

7. As many of you already know, I have a LOT of pet peeves :)

8. I am a klutz. Seriously. For someone who participated actively in figure skating, dance, capoeira and (now) surfing, I am highly accident prone. And not the run-of-the-mill accidents either. We are talking "how the hell did you manage to do that" kind of incidents. Among my friends' favorites are: Kage gets dental floss stuck in her teeth and has to rush to the dentist, Kage falls UP three different flights of stairs on campus, and the infamous Kage gets stung by a dead bee.

9. Most of my high school and college life I thought I would end up in advertising or TV production.  I fell into the writing thing by complete accident. Working for Star Cinema as an intern proved to me that prod wasn't my thing after all (hello, I finished 120 work hours in 9 days!) and while going on job hunts with Binky, I realized I didn't want to be in advertising after all. Goes to show, you never really know what you'll end up doing with your college degree.

10. I continue to miss my dad at the randomest moments. And not a day passes that I do not think of him one way or another.

Blog EntryAdopt a Kitten, Bring in Good KarmaApr 4, '08 5:44 AM

Hey out there!

I'm helping out an NGO called CARA that rehomes abandoned kittens. The kittens are between 5 to 8 months and have all been spayed, potty trained and hand raised. These are rescue kittens who were found abandoned or half-drowned. There are currently 26 kittens that need loving homes.

Since they have been hand-raised and neutered, they are mellow and loving. So if you know of anyone who might want to add a kitten to their lives, please let me know.

Blog EntryHow you helped during Earth Hour:Apr 1, '08 4:32 AM
for everyone

This email has been going around. I nicked my copy from Nix. But before we get into it, I'd like to say "good job!" to everyone who participated in Earth Hour. Mocha Blends in Eastwood, the entire town of Puerto Princessa, municipal centers in San Fernando La Union and the private houses of a good amount of Filipinos are among those that I know turned their lights off for Mother Earth.

And now, the email:

WWF and Meralco estimates that more than a million Filipinos participated, saving 56MWh of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30-tonnes in Luzon alone – equivalent to shutting down an entire coal-fired powerplant!

Yes, the 30 tons is for the entire hour. This translates into:

Number of cars equivalent

Luzon: 334 cars consuming full tank fuel of 40L; 263 jeepneys consuming full tank fuel of 45L

MM: 96 cars 75 jeepneys

Number of households equivalent

Luzon - 560 households consuming 100kWh/ month

MM - 160 hh @ 100kWh/month

Millions of pesos equivalent

Luzon - 552,338.47 = P532,000 (kWh savings@ P9.5/kWh) + P20,338.47 (CO2 avoidance @ EUR10/t-CO2 and P66.034/EUR)

MM - 157,810.99 = P152,000 (kWh savings) + P5,810.99 (CO2 avoidance)

Again, thank you very much for your support.

Sincerely,
Teena

Blog EntryTurn Off Your Lights for Mother Earth Mar 12, '08 3:20 AM
for everyone
On 29 March 2008 the Philippines will join countries around the world as we literally "turn the lights out" for Earth Hour - an event that will fuel awareness on climate change and prove that when the people of the world work together, they can make a difference in the fight against global warming.

Earth Hour will take place throughout the Philippines from 8 to 9 in the evening on Saturday night, 29 March 2008. WWF invites you to participate by shutting off lights for 60 minutes, organizing your own "lights-out" event or by forwarding this mail to your friends,
workmates and family.

Launched in Australia on the 31st of March 2007, Earth Hour moved 2.2 million people and 2100 businesses in Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour. This massive collective effort reduced the city's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour. With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.

YOUR participation will go a long way in spreading the message that we, as individual droplets working collectively – can create an impetus far more powerful than the mightiest of rivers. For more information, log on to the WWF Earth Hour page at: www.earthhour.org.

The best thing to eat in Siargao aside from super fresh fish and the pan de surf is, hands down, Chicken Mango Curry. Ocean 101 has it. Marife serves it too. It's like your trip to the island isn't complete if you don't eat this at least once during your stay. Millie and I became obsessed with this dish when we were on the island almost four years ago. It has a lot to do with our mango fanaticism I think. But that's a story for some other blog.

And this morning, because I've been in a cooky mood ever since I got that herb garden, I decided to attempt my own version of it. Red chilli paste, ginger, spices, coconut milk, chicken, potatos and sweet luscious mango all thrown in together and made to party. It didn't come out exactly like the Siargao versions but it's still pretty damn tasty.

Okay, so it doesn't look like much in that tiny ramiken, shot with a point and shoot and no lighting. In fact, I will be the first to admit that it kinda looks like afritada. But believe me, it was super yummy! Close your eyes and imagine the smell of spicy coconut milk with just the slightest undernote of sweet mango. See? Yummy.

It put me in such a good mood that I decided to head to the aforementioned herb garden to see what I could harvest. Today's herb? BASIL. Lovely sweet and American basil... bright shiny green leaves just aching to be rough chopped and added to garlic, olive oil and lemon juice to make a quickie pesto marinade for the rest of the chicken pieces I had left over.

But since I can't leave well enough alone, I had to look for something else to add to the
chicken pesto. Japanese firm tofu sliced into small rectangles joined the mess on the stovetop. The skin crisped just the way I like and the chicken absorbed the fresh pesto like a sponge. Then, again because I don't know how to just be still in a kitchen, I dusted the tofu with oregano and a little cayenne.

The result lacked a little kick. Maybe because there were too many chicken pieces and not enough basil leaves? Hmmm... I'm not sure. Which only means that the next time my basil becomes harvest-able (yes, I know it isn't a word), I will have to try this again. And maybe I wont be tamad to bust out the D200 to shoot proper food shots. Heehee.

That is all.
Thank you.
